Book Review Time

Remember these?

  1. The Last Dragonslayer - A little confusing, but the world building was wonderful.  I love the idea of magic and magicians being old hat and selling their services and the idea that a girl serving time as an indentured servant is going to save the world.
  2. Blue Plate Special - Could not put it down.  I'm not a fan of memoirs and was very surprised at how much I loved this.  She resisted every urge to make herself sympathetic.  I wish I could look at my own life that way.
  3. Curse of the Spellmans - I read this only because I read the first one and purchased this at the same time.  It was fine, but I wanted the slow burn romance to go somewhere.  Part of me wants to read the third to see if it is resolved.  I may...I may not.
  4. White Corridor - Started it, but it was a little creepy and since it was late at night I had to put it down.  I've decided to save this for another time.
  5. Soulless - So good.  SO GOOD!!  I read this one and three of the sequels.  I have the last one and I'm savoring it.  The books were like candy for me.  I would pick them up and devour them. My favorite character?  Ivy.  Hands down.
  6. Outbound Flight - I've owned this book for years.  It required full concentration and since I rarely  focus on anything completely I wanted to wait until I could.  So I did.  And was rewarded.  The story was engaging and I loved the involvement of Obi Wan (the story occurs during the Clone War period).  But (spoiler alert) I didn't like the idea that the one woman character sacrificed herself at the end.  I wanted her to be the hero and survive.
  7. The Old Fox Deceiv'd - Reminded me of all the great mysteries I used to read as a high schooler.  It also reminded me of my dad and I wish I'd read it when he was still here to discuss it.  I thought it was the first in the series then found out it was the second.  I went to my mom's house and borrowed (possible stole) four more of them, including the first, and I plan on reading them soon.
I also read a Cassandra Clare book - Clockwork Angel, as well as several other books and I've officially become an avid reader again.  I'll post the next round of books soon.  If I was going to recommend a book from the group above I would say Martha Grimes, if you like a good yarn, and Gail Carriger, if you like a good romance (with vamps and werewolves and steampunk).
